Telomere shortening in normal human cells causes replicative senescence, a p53-dependent growth arrest state, which is thought to represent an innate defence against tumour progression. However, although it has been postulated that critical telomere loss generates a 'DNA damage' signal, the signalling pathway(s) that alerts cells to short dysfunctional telomeres remains only partially defined.

Transforming growth factor beta 1 (TGF-beta1) plays a key role in connective tissue remodeling, scarring, and fibrosis. The effects of mechanical forces on TGF-beta1 and collagen deposition are not well understood. We tested the hypothesis that brief (10 min) static tissue stretch attenuates TGF-beta1-mediated new collagen deposition in response to injury.

PURPOSE: Retinitis pigmentosa (RP) is a progressive neurodegenerative disease resulting in blindness for which there is no current treatment. Although the members of the family of RP diseases differ in etiology, their outcomes are the same: apoptosis of rods and then by cones. Recently, the bile acid tauroursodeoxycholic acid (TUDCA) has been shown to have antiapoptotic properties in neurodegenerative diseases, including those of the retina.

BACKGROUND AND PURPOSE: Andrographolide is the active component of Andrographis paniculata, a plant used in both Indian and Chinese traditional medicine, and it has been demonstrated to induce apoptosis in different cancer cell lines. However, not much is known about how it may affect the key receptors implicated in cancer. Knowledge of how andrographolide affects receptor trafficking will allow us to better understand new mechanisms by which andrographolide may cause death in cancer cells.

A traditional Chinese medicine, Guan-Xin-Er-Hao (GXEH), is a famous multiple target therapeutic polypharmaceutical. Our aim was to evaluate whether or not oral administration of GXEH has an anti-inflammatory effect associated with blockade of nuclear factor-kappa B (NF-kappaB), and to investigate the NF-kappaB-mediated pro-inflammatory cytokines expression pathway during acute myocardial infarction (AMI) in rats. Sprague-Dawley rats were randomly assigned to four groups: oral GXEH administered at 15 or 5 g/kg, the vehicle control and sham-operated groups.
