Sr. Mary Jean Ryan, Franciscan Sister of Mary, is president/chief executive officer of SSM Health Care (SSMHC), one of the largest Catholic healthcare systems in the United States, with 23,000 employees and 5,000 affiliated physicians serving in 21 hospitals and 3 nursing homes. This year SSMHC became the first healthcare recipient of the Malcolm Baldrige National Quality Award. During her 16-year tenure, Sr. Mary Jean has emphasized three key themes: preservation of the earth's resources, valuing ethnic and gender diversity, and commitment to continuous quality improvement (CQI).
In 2002 Catholic Charities USA and the Catholic Health Association sponsored a study assessing the state of collaboration in Catholic ministries across the United States. The study was conducted by Health Systems Research, Inc., and was funded in part by a grant from SC Ministry Foundation. As part of the study, researchers visited give sites (St. Petersburg/Tampa, FL; Cleveland; Wichita, KS; Orange County, CA; and Albany, NY) to learn what makes for successful collaboration.

The author presents the history of the places where patients with epidemic pathologies were isolated. Since the study of medicine began, such places have been known as asclepiei, xenodochi, hospices, lazarettos, sanitary cordons, and quarantine stations and they contributed to controlling epidemics in Europe. Important not only in the context in which they were created, these structures expressed the medical culture and point of view of that age.
A social network analysis of eighty-nine midlevel health care professionals showed that middle managers' strategic knowledge is positively associated with championing alternative ideas and synthesizing new information for upper management. In addition, the relationship between knowledge and middle management strategic activities in informal networks is moderated by the manager's social position.
SSM Health Care (SSMHC), the first healthcare recipient of the Malcolm Baldrige National Quality Award, has been cited by both Baldrige and the Joint Commission on Accreditation of Healthcare Organizations as having a culture of continuous quality improvement (CQI). SSM Health Care began to implement CQI systemwide in 1990. CQI provided the foundation for other strategies that served to further weave quality improvement into the fabric of the organization's culture.
This reflective narrative is intended as a "Letter to the Editor" of sorts, to highlight my personal and professional growth in the role of mission leader for a large academic health centre in South Western Ontario, Canada. This story takes the reader through my lived experience, my beliefs and views of the role of mission leader, against a backdrop of the work of Mary Kathryn Grant, a pioneer in this area of mission and leadership.
The growth of the city's population, rapid advances in medical science, the increasing understanding of the importance of hygiene and, finally, the demand for health care led to the erection of a modern 353-bed municipal hospital complex at Pommerensdorf, Apfelallee, which was officially opened in 1879. From the very beginning of its existence, the municipal hospital was constantly in the process of extension and rebuilding. A hospital base was set up and new departments and clinics were opened. In 1937, the number of the hospital beds had increased to 1,004.
In the biggest deal of its kind, not-for-profit giant Ascension is going to build ambulatory surgery centers with for-profit United Surgical Partners, which already has a deal with Baylor, left. "Hospitals are realizing that outpatient services are the future. This strategy is sound," one healthcare consultant said.
Despite increased security, immigrants continue to enter the United States, most without resources to address health needs. That is the case in and around Richmond, VA, where a quickly growing immigrant population has become a priority for Bon Secours Richmond Health System (BSR), a member of Bon Secours Health System (BSHS), Marriottsville, MD. To plan for the impact of immigrants on community health resources, BSR's Office of Community Health Services in August 2002 brought together local health and human service providers, as well as community groups.
